that’s not a sub-woofer. To him sub-woofers were little plistac boxes with a single hole the common band-pass units sold with computer speakers. Suffice to say he got an education that day when I fired up the 1,000 watt amp that powered it and put on some music with a lot of very low bass.2. Of course it isn’t true. This the old tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it cliche. Just because it is below, or at the edge, of the range of hearing does not mean it is not sound. The most destructive frequency of sound to the human body, the brown note is 6Hz. You can’t hear it, but if it is loud enough it can kill you.3. See #1. There are many units on the market that are really bass modules. Bose is the most well known. They don’t even call it a sub-woofer but many people do. These things are merely providing bass for speakers that don’t really have woofers. A true sub-woofer is more or less an add-on to an already complete speaker system to reproduce that range that shakes the floor and goes down into the visceral, infrasonic region.4. I know where you are coming from with this one. It comes from the car audio crowd. To them there are only subs. No woofers. It has infected other areas as well. I have seen tiny speakers 3 billed as subs. 5. Absolutely not. A really good speaker system does not need a sub-woofer. Try telling someone who owns a pair of Klipschorns that they need a sub-woofer. There are some speakers that have a woofer, midbass, midrange and tweeter. In such a system the woofer can very well extend down to the range of the infrasonic. Some might call the woofer in that system a sub-woofer but the mid woofer does not really go low enough, typically approx. 100 Hz, to be considered a true woofer. The confusion here is coming from terminology. Well,.some ignorance too. There is different usage in the various audio fields. Use the term bass bin with someone who is not in the concert sound field and they will have no idea what you are talking about. Oh, a subwoofer! Well no. We sometimes use sub-woofers and bass bins. The sub-woofers used by the car audio crowd are considered crude, sloppy, inaccurate, brutish devices by the golden ears crowd with their $5,000.00 monoblock tube amplifiers powering huge, sub-woofer arrays of 18 drivers in di-pole configuration. Perhaps there should be some regulation. Like cheese. Velveeta is technically not cheese. It’s Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product as the term is regulated by the FDA. I’m a believer in smaller government but perhaps we need a SWWA. Sub-woofer and Woofer Administration.
BS low – rationality high! Really good anwesr!
